Behavior Consulting

How we support the dog & family

Behavior is not something that can be “cured”. It is naturally adaptive and necessary for the survival of any animal and its future generations. A dog’s behavior is influenced by many internal and external conditions, which interact through both Nature AND Nurture. All these conditions, or needs, comprise their L.E.G.S.® (Learning, Environment, Genetics, Self).

When “behavior problems” arise with our family dogs, it’s not a matter of obedience, or that they simply just need more “training”. Rather, these “problems” are complex needs that are not being met - an imbalance or friction in their L.E.G.S. - and often are being expressed through ‘normal’ canine-specific behaviors, albeit, in ways that may be “undesirable” for us humans.

Through Family Dog Mediation® we FIRST understand the dog’s unique L.E.G.S., and then consider how that all intersects with the needs and expectations of the family. From there we can provide effective, reward-based strategies aimed at supporting needs and welfare, and restoring harmony to the human-canine relationship.

This is a team approach, which involves the family and their dog, the behavior consultant; and collaboration with the veterinary team and other dog professionals. Each party plays a unique role in supporting the welfare of the dog, and family, in front of us!

Kind Words

“We at Ruff Start Rescue believe in positive behavioral training techniques, and we are committed to partnering with trainers that share this same philosophy. Upon meeting Brian, we were very impressed by his knowledge and kind demeanor. We really feel he has the animals’ best interest at heart. His training methods and client-centered approach allow the handler and dog to create a strong positive bond that we feel is so critical - especially for dogs that have had difficult pasts. We will continue to reach out to Brian for assistance with our rescue dogs, and hope to maintain our relationship with him for many years to come.“
